Taking us back to 1986, Nike is set to launch this Air Max 1 that pays homage to the originals which featured a larger Air bubble, chunkier midsole, and a different looking upper. Back in the 80s, the original pairs were recalled and redesigned / relaunched with the smaller Air unit that we know today, but this retro is a nod to one of the best little known stories surrounding the iconic Air Max lineage ever told.

Nike celebrated Air Max Day, 3.26, by dropping three regional exclusive Air Max 1s. The Asia and Latin America pair was the women’s “Wabi-Sabi” colourway which I’m reviewing today. Based on the philosophy of seeing beauty in imperfection, this pair is done in mismatching fashion, with a canvas and leather construction, contrast stitching, and an overall raw and natural aesthetic. Concepts completed their three-shoe “Message to the Universe” Nike Air Max 1 pack by dropping the final “Far Our” colourway on Air Max Day, 3.26. Definitely the most colourful and vibrant of the three, it features textiles and patterns worn by music festival goers in the 1960s, and came with a special box and extras! One of the more underrated releases for this year’s Air Max Day, Nike released the debut colourway of the Air Max Pre-Day. Channeling 1970s style with modern day tech and sustainability practices, these incorporate recycled materials in both the upper and sole, and completely expose the Air Max unit on the heel, showcasing it in its totality. Dropping this past Air Max Day, the Nike Air Max 1 “Evolution of Icons” celebrates the legendary Air Max silhouettes that came before it in this mismatching “What The” styled shoe. Taking components of iconic colourways of past Air Max models like the “Infrared” Air Max 90, “Neon” Air Max 95, and “Silver Bullet” Air Max 97, these are a great pair to celebrate 34 years of Air Max.
